Central Coast Watermen was founded in 2019 during the pandemic by Jack Akrop, who had previously coordinated the Capitola Junior Lifeguard Program, overseeing over 1,000 students. During this time, Jack identified areas where the program could be improved, leading to the creation of his own organization, Central Coast Watermen. Our mission is to teach kids Ocean Safety, Awareness, and Sports, providing a step-by-step guide from teaching basic swimming skills to fostering a sense of comfort and safety in the ocean thus starting “Wave Warrior’s Summer Camp”.
A Waterman is someone who utilizes the ocean for recreation, for mental, to cultivate their food and beyond. Imagine a world where students could take a class and within 1 week they will understand how to surf, dive and fish for their own food, save a life and make lifelong friends along the way. At Central Coast Watermen, we are dedicated to teaching others the endless possibilities that the ocean holds.
Camp Overview: The Wave Warriors Summer Camp focuses on building life skills through ocean safety, fitness, and adventure sports. Each camp day begins at 10:00 am with a group discussion on character development, leadership, and a review of prior lessons. Afterward, students are divided into three skill-based groups and rotate through the following stations: 1. Surfing Station: Students learn how to surf safely and efficiently, progressing from basic skills to more advanced techniques. 2. Watermen Station: Focuses on various water crafts, including prone paddling, bodysurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and fishing. 3. Surf Responder Station: Teaches students basic first aid, emergency response, victim rescue techniques, and how to develop an emergency action plan.
