Halloween is a kid-favorite holiday that is likely to look very different this year. While we might not be planning the typical Halloween events with the kids, there are some things we can do to make it just as fun, if not more fun, than usual! Plus, you can start early and make it a Halloween week if you want!
1. Halloween movie night
Plan ahead and get some Halloween jammies, pick out some fun Halloween movies, treats, and popcorn and enjoy a family movie night.
2. Boo your neighbors and friends
I think my kids actually enjoy booing others even more than getting boo'ed! This is a fun tradition that's perfect for the times we are in. Gather up some Halloween goodies and put them in gift bags or baskets and doorbell ditch some friends and neighbors with some Halloween treats. Find the printable poem to include and more info here.
3. Read some Halloween-themed books
Visit the library or order some fun Halloween-themed books. Here are nine books your kids will love.
4. Halloween arts and crafts

5. Halloween recipes
Enjoy some Halloween-themed meals, snacks, and treats all week long. Check out our Halloween and Fall Crafts, Recipes, and More Guide for some great ideas.
6. Virtual costume contest or costume party
Invite friends and family to join you on Zoom and show off your costumes! Make it a dance party for even more fun!
7. Candy hunt
Think Easter Egg hunt, but no eggs. Toss or hide the wrapped candies around the yard and let the kids find them.
8. Family jack-o-lantern contest
Get all of the supplies ready for a fun family contest - you can carve or paint, or whatever your family prefers. Make up some fun categories such as funniest or scariest, etc., and go all out. Pick up some fun prizes and make sure there's a prize for everyone. Here are four no-carve pumpkin ideas and here are some pumpkin carving tips.
9. Neighborhood decorating contest
Reach out to your neighbors and encourage them to decorate. The kids will enjoy seeing all of the creative decorations.
10. Trunk or Treat with friends
Maybe not as big as we are used to, but plan a trunk or treat with some friends and meet up in a parking lot - spread out - and let the kids go from car to car trunk or treating as usual - with their Halloween masks on.
