We've always encouraged our kids to help out in the kitchen and at 10 and 11 years old, they are both quite capable these days. It's never too early to start - NOW is the perfect time to get the kids involved in the kitchen!

Kitchen tasks for kids, based on age:

Toddlers

Setting the Table
Put out the napkins, non-breakable dishware, and silverware to get them involved.

Clearing the Table
Toss used paper napkins and carry non-breakable dishware to the counter.

Food Prep
Toddlers can help with simple tasks such as stirring while you help them hold the spoon, oil pans with a pastry brush, placing cut-up fruit and veggies on a tray, etc.

Preschoolers

Setting the Table
Put everything needed for the meal on the table.

Clearing the Table
Clear everything from the table.

Food Prep
Rinse and cut produce with a child-friendly knife, measure ingredients, and mix and stir.

Dishes
Rinse dishes and load dishwasher. Help unload dishwasher.

School Agers

Food Prep
Prepare box mixes such as muffins, biscuits, cookies, and cakes, cut and peel veggies, help cook meals following a recipe.

Dishes
Wash dishes, load and unload dishwasher.

Tweens and Teens

Food Prep
Prepare simple meals following a recipe.

Getting the kids involved in the kitchen can create some fun memories while also being a big help. With the younger ages, sometimes it can feel like it's more work than it's worth, but I promise, it will be worth it in the end! Plus, little ones usually love to help and it's important to encourage that. And before long, you should be able to have an older child a meal or two each week which, I promise, is TOTALLY WORTH IT!
