Christmas Tree Disposal Options

Here's what to do with your old Christmas tree!

Out with the old, in with the new! Now what to do with that Christmas tree? Let us help you figure that out! 

Trees are only compostable if they are free of all lights lights, decorations, nails and wooden stands nailed to the trunk, tinsel, and the tree stand. In addition, any tree that is flocked with artificial snow contains fire retardant and cannot be composted. Read on to decide what to do with it now.

Fremont

Gutter for Republic Services to pick up - Single family homes only* - between December 31, 2018 to January 11, 2019:

  • If the tree is less than 6 feet in length, place the whole tree in the gutter on your normal collection day.
  • If the tree is over 6 feet in length, cut the tree in half and place both halves in the gutter on your collection day.
  • Be sure the tree is in the gutter, not on the sidewalk.
  • Double check that the tree is free of all decorations to allow composting and keep the storm drains litter-free.

Green Organics Can:

  • Cut the compostable tree so that the pieces fit loosely in the can with the lid closed.
  • Place the can at the curb on your scheduled collection day.

Blue or Black Garbage Can - As the least sustainable option, please use as your last option:

  • Cut up your tree that contains flocking or decorations you were unable to remove such as tinsel so that the pieces fit loosely in your blue or black garbage can with the lid closed.
  • Place the can at the curb on your scheduled collection day.

Drop off at Republic Services - between December 26, 2018 to January 11, 2019:

  • Take your Christmas tree to the Republic Services customer center located at 42600 Boyce Road in Fremont (open Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM). 
  • Compostable trees may be dropped off for free. Non-compostable trees may be dropped off for a $5 charge.

*If you live in a multi-family complex, please contact your property manager to learn how your tree can be properly composted.

Newark
