This party was a little different than our usual movie screening parties. While The BFG was playing, the kids (and parents) were crafting away making some fun movie-themed crafts! I loved that instead of just staring at the screen, the kids were actually interacting and enjoying some hands-on crafting while also watching the film.
The BFG movie is a film version of Roald Dahl's book with the same title. The movie tells about a young girl named Sophie and her family-friendly adventures with a big friendly giant who has very large ears, wears a vest and catches and bottles dreams. While the other giants eat "Human Beans," the BFG eats and drinks some interesting foods which made for some great fun at our party.
In my opinion, The BFG movie is less dark than the actual book, which is great for the younger audience. The movie is rated PG for some action, a few scary moments and a little rude humor. The heartwarming friendship between Sophie and the BFG is fun to watch and the movie teaches perseverance, courage and empathy.
Now on to our party... Let's start with the food. Here's what was on the menu for our BFG party.

Snozzcumber:
What you need:
- Rice crispies
- Chocolate frosting
- Mini marshmallows
What you do:
- Shape the rice crispies into a large cucumber shape.
- Cover the top and sides with chocolate frosting.
- Press mini marshmallows into the frosting.
- Cut and serve.

Frobscottle
What you need:
- Ginger ale
- Pop Rocks
- Green food coloring
- Clear cups
- Put a drop of green food coloring into each cup.
- Pour a bit of Pop Rocks into each cup (we did about 1/3 a pack into each cup and added about 1/2 cup of soda).
- Pour the ginger ale into the cups and listen to the popping - it's quite loud!
- Enjoy the green-colored fizzy drink which is a lot of fun to drink.

Human Beans
These were a huge hit! Sour Patch Kids make great "Human Beans!"
Cheese and Crackers
I decided that "mini foods" would make a perfect snack for my giants! I found mini snack crackers and mini pepperoni at my dollar store and sliced cheddar jack cheese sticks and string cheese sticks into little pieces.
Here's the crafts we had at the party. Host a movie and crafting party or even just enjoy some crafts with your own kids after watching the movie. It'll be lots of fun!
As the kids arrived, we invited them to make their own "big ears."

Big Ears Headband
What you need:
- Note paper
- Headband
- Glue stick
- Markers
- Stack 4 sheets of note paper together and cut out a half heart shape.
- Use markers to color ears as you'd like.
- Lay each set of ears (front and back) with the flat side together and run a line of glue stick along the flat edge on one ear and then place the colored front ear onto the back piece of ear.
- Put the newly glued ear onto the correct side of the headband.
- Add more glue to the remaining part of the ear and press the two pieces together.
- Repeat with the second ear.
- We used the idea here to inspire our Big Ears Headband: http://blog.hobbycraft.co.uk/how-to-make-bfg-ears/.

Next, the kids made their own paper bag vests.

Paper Bag Vest
What you need:
- Large paper bag
- Scissors
- Markers
- Cut from the middle of the bag's open edge to the middle of the bottom of the bag.
- Cut out a neck hole on the bottom of the bag.
- Cut arm holes in each side of the bag.
- If there is print on the outside of the bag, turn it inside out.
- Let kids decorate as desired.
For our next craft we made dream catchers.
Dream Catchers
What you need:
- Paper plates
- Yarn
- Hole punch
- Feathers
- Pony beads
- Scissors
- Tape
- Cut out the center circle of the paper plate.
- Cut a shape with the inside circle that you removed, if you'd like.
- Use a hole punch and punch some holes around the inside of the paper plate ring.
- Wrap the end of a length of yarn with tape to make it easier for kids to thread the yarn back and forth through the holes. If you are using an optional shape you can punch holes in that and also thread the yarn through the holes in that.
- Once you reach the end of your circle of holes, tie off the yarn.
- Punch a hole in the top and add a strand of yarn to hang it with.
- Punch two or three holes in the bottom of the plate and thread some yarn to hang down.
- Thread a few beads onto the hanging yarn.
- Using the end of the yarn, tie on a feather of two and slide a few beads down over the tied part of the yarn.
- Remove any tape and hang over bed to "catch dreams."
Dream Jars
What you need:
- Empty jars
- Water beads (I bought on Amazon. They also sell at craft stores.)
- Labels (I used name tag labels)
- Water
What you do:
- Soak water beads overnight as they need 6 to 8 hours to get to full size.
- We used recycled jars, so I washed them first and painted the lids ahead of time (so they would be good and dry and not stick to the jar).
- Drain the water from your soaking water beads.
- Use a ladle, scoop or measuring cup and let the kids add some water beads to their empty jar.
- Add some water to the jar and put the lid on.
- Write on the label and add it to the jar.
In addition to all of these fun crafts we also had BFG coloring pages and a BFG word search. The movie is about two hours long and these crafts and activities kept the kids entertained along with the movie the entire time and then some! You can see all of the photos from our party here.
If you create any of these fun crafts or foods with the kids, send us some pictures!
