Niles Canyon Railway

Our Best-Kept Secret!

By Sponsored Content July 28, 2016

Niles Canyon Railway travels through Niles Canyon. The train cross over 2 bridges and rides along Alameda Creek. The docent on board talks about the history in the canyon.

Our round trip departures from Sunol are 10:30, 12:30, and 2:30. Our round trip departures from Niles/Fremont are 11:20 and 1:20. Our round trip tickets for regular Sunday operations are $13.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors, and $7.00 for children, and 2 and under are free. Once on board passengers can walk through all of the vintage cars and also visit our snack bar on board.

We offer a caboose on the 10:30, 12:30, and 2:30 Sunol trains on Sundays. People can reserve the caboose online for $75.00 and then the day of their ride, pick up souvenir tickets at the Sunol depot ticket window and ride the caboose. The best spot to sit is in the top in the cupola!  After their ride, they pay the standard $13.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors and $7.00 for kids for those who rode. This way they don't pay for no-shows. The caboose has seating for 28 adults, but you can fit a few more passengers if little kids are on board, since 3 kids can sit per bench seat instead of 2 adults. Groups can also use the picnic tables in the park across the street from the Sunol depot both before and after their rides.

The Train of Lights begin the Friday after Thanksgiving and run every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday from Thanksgiving through the weekend after Christmas. We have a 4:30 round trip departure from Niles/Fremont and a 7:30 round trip departure from Sunol. Holiday music is played throughout the train and Santa (and sometimes Mrs. C.) are on board to visit everyone as they walk the 15 car train. We have a snack bar on board that sells everything for $1.00, and they make the best hot chocolate ever!

We have school Education Trains for field trips during the school year, and also have some during the summer for recreation programs, summer schools, senior groups, and families. These train rides are $6.00 for everyone.

Our Sunol depot is at 6 Kilkare Road in Sunol, and the entrance to our Niles/Fremont station is at 37029 Mission Boulevard, at the corner of Mission and Sullivan Underpass.
